Dhumavati Jayanti 2022, Story, Importance and Rituals

Dhumavati Jayanti is celebrated all over the country with great enthusiasm and love. This festival is also known as Dhumavati Mahavidya. This goddess is a group of ten tantric goddesses; this festival is celebrated as the day when the Shakti form of Goddess Dhumavati was incarnated on earth. This is the fiercest form of Goddess Durga. Dhumavati Jayanti will fall on June 8 this year.

Dhumavati is described as a teacher who inspires the universe to avoid illusory divisions. His ugly appearance inspires the devotee to seek the inner truth of life. The goddess is described as having supernatural powers. She is also worshiped for the destruction of enemies.

Dhumavati Jayanti-Story Of Dhumavati Mata

According to one of the Hindu mythology, Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva, asked him food when she was hungry. After which Shiva assured her that he would arrange for some food, but when Shiva could not arrange food for some time, and then Parvati, restless with hunger, swallowed Shiva.

After this, due to the poison in the throat of Lord Shiva, smoke started coming out of Parvati’s body. She started looking terrible due to the effect of poison.latr Shiva came out of her body by yoga and told her that this form of yours will be known as Dhumavati, and because of the curse of Lord Shiva, she is worshiped as a widow since she swallowed her husband Shiva. In this form she looks very cruel and is holding a sword in one hand.

According to another legend, when Shiva’s wife Sati came to know that her father Daksha had organized a huge yagya, but she and her husband Lord Shankar had not been invited to it. Shiva stopped her a lot from going to that yagya, but despite her opposition, she went to the yagya, where many famous personalities and saints had come. However Sati felt that her father was not paying attention to her. Due to which she started feeling very humiliated and became furious and committed suicide by jumping into the Havan Kund of Yagya, and sacrificed herself. After a few moments, the goddess was born, which is known as Dhumavati.

The goddess is depicted as an ugly widow with gray hair and a white sari while riding a chariot. Her presence may be dangerous and frightening but she always descended to destroy sinners and demons and to free the earth from sinners like these. It  is a symbol of the fact that faith in truth and virtue remove all sorrows.  Worshiping on this day removes all the sins and problems of the devotees.

In ancient times, sage Durvasa and Saint Parashuram had attained special powers by worshiping Goddess Dhumavati. The goddess is also worshiped since she has the power to protect from evil spirits and she is also addressed as Kalhapriya as the one who solves the problems of the world. It is believed that if one gets a glimpse of the goddess on the day of Dhumavati Jayanti, then he gets divine blessings.

It is celebrated on the eighth day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, and according to the English calendar it is celebrated in the month of May or June. In 2022, Dhumavati Jayanti is to be celebrated on 7th June, and it will end on 8th June on Ashtami Tithi.

Dhumavati Jayanti Rituals

On this day, devotees get up early in the morning before the sun rises and are ready for the whole day for the rituals of worship.

A fixed place for worship is chosen and decorated, after that the goddess is worshiped with incense, incense sticks and flowers.

On this day a mole tied in a black cloth is offered to the goddess. It is a belief that if black sesame seeds are offered to the goddess, then whatever wishes the devotee has, they get fulfilled.

Special prasad is prepared on this day. Goddess mantras are chanted while performing the puja, because the goddess is pleased with the chanting of mantras and ends sorrows and blesses them for happiness in life.

When the mantra is over, then aarti is performed and after that the prasad is distributed among the family members and devotees present at the place of worship.

On the day of Dhumavati Jayanti, a procession of Mother Goddess is organized with great pomp at night. Only men can participate in this procession.

Although married people are told not to worship Dhumavati. It is said that their worship awakens the desire for solitude. Disillusionment starts with worldly things.

Married women cannot participate in this procession. According to tradition, they are prohibited from worshiping Mother Dhumvati. It is believed that she believes or follows this tradition for the safety of her husband and children; she can only see this worship from afar.
