Every year, 14 November is marked worldwide in over 160 countries as World Diabetes Day, which aims to make the public aware of the chronic disease, which results in the deaths of 1.5 million people worldwide annually.

Undoubtedly, diabetes has emerged as one of the major problems of humanity. According to The Hindu, India ranks second in the chart of the top 10 countries for people with diabetes. The country is home to 77 million diabetics and the stats are increasing fiercely. While our neighbor China tops the list with an estimated 116 million diabetics.

Various studies indicate that diabetic patients are more common in urban populations than in rural populations due to differences in food intake. To avoid this disease, not only awareness but also lifestyle changes are necessary. Due to irregular eating habits and less physical activity, more diabetic patients are being registered in cities.

Talking about the history of World Diabetes Day, the day’s marked on the birth anniversary of Canadian medical scientist Sir Frederick Banting, who discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.
