Muharram is among the renowned and important festivals that are commemorated by the Muslim community all over the world. This festival marks the embarking of the Islamic New Year. Ramadan is the first of four sacred months as per the Islamic calendar. Hijri New Year marks the second sacred month.
On the last day of the Islamic calendar by sighting the new moon, Islamic New Year 2023 celebrations kickstart. The celebration will go on for ten consecutive days. Islamic New Year’s 10th day is known as the Day of Ashura and it carries the highest significance for various reasons. In 2023, Muharram begins on 19 July and will end on 29 July.

History and Significance

By both the Shia and Sunni Muslims, the 10th day of Muharram, the Day of Ashura is regarded as the utmost important. As per the belief of Shia Muslims, on this day Prophet Muhammed’s grandson Hussayn Ibn Ali died. Hence they mourn to commemorate the death anniversary. As per stories, Imam Hussayn revolted against caliph Yazid and raised objections against him. This was the reason for the battle of Karbala which occurred on the day of Ashura in 680 AD.

As per the belief of Sunni Muslims, Moses the religious leader led Israel to the Red Sea. On the 10th day of Muharram, he got victory over the army of war chariots and the Egyptian Pharaoh. As per another belief, on the 10th day of Islamic New Year, Adam and Eve were also created by God.

Celebration

Both the Muslim communities, Sunni and Shia commemorate Muharram in their distinct styles and way. Shia Muslims mourn for all ten days. They observe Islamic New Year not as a celebration of joy. Moreover, they dress in black and refrain from attending any social events such as weddings and functions. They even attend special prayer meetings at mosques.

On the tenth day of Hijri New Year, they walk barefooted on the street processions, whipping their chests and chanting until it draws blood from their body. This is how Shia Muslims observe Muharram. However, Sunni Muslims observe Muharram by doing fasts all these ten days of the month.
