Saudi Arabia has announced the opening day of Muharram which signifies the start of the Islamic New Year or The Hijri. Muharram is a very holy occasion for the Muslim Ummah though it is interpreted differently by both Sunni and Shia sects.
Saudi Arabia whose rulers are the custodians of the holiest shrines, Mecca and Medina has declared the start of the Islamic Year in Hijri 1445 which also signifies the start of the Islamic New Year.
However, the day is celebrated on different dates across the world since the Islamic Hijri follows the lunar cycle. Thus in India, the Hijri 1445 will start on 20 July as per the Gregorian calendar. Saudi Arabia has however announced July 19 as the start of the Islamic New Year since the crescent moon was visible in the Kingdom on 19th July. It signifies the end of the Dhul Hijjah on July 18. Consequently, the first day of Muharram will be observed on Wednesday, July 19 in Saudi Arabia.
In major Islamic countries like Pakistan, Indonesia, malaysia and Morocco the date of the start of the Islamic Hijri is dependent on the sighting of the crescent moon and the date can vary from other countries for example the Gulf countries where the skies are clear and the crescent moon is clearly visible. However in India which has the second highest Muslim population after Indonesia, the sightings of the crescent Moon are often hindered by the monsoon clouds.

Muharram is celebrated to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein who was the Prophet (PBUH) Mohammed’s Grandson. Hussein attained martyrdom at the historic Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The battle is often regarded as the battle of justice against oppression. It is said that Hussein refused to pay obeisance to the tyranny of Yazid and ultimately attained martyrdom rather than submit to tyranny. The day is also remembered to validate Hussein’s sacrifice for truth and justice as Muharram. The day is a source of inspiration for millions of faithful around the world.
The day which also happens to be the first day of the Islamic New Year is also known as Al Hijri or Arabic New Year. It celebrates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina and is of utmost importance to all Muslims including both the major sects, Shia and Sunni. However both the sects interpret the day differently. While Sunnis observe the day as remembrance, for Shias it is a day of mourning. Shia Muslims indulge in mourning processions, self-flagellation, and chest-beating as expressions of grief. For Sunnis, it is also a day when Prophet Muhammed(PBUH) observed a fast on this day after Prophet Musa or Moses (PBUH).
