Google explains what went wrong with Gemini AI image generation

Google Pauses AI-generated Historical Images After Backlash

New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS) – Google faced criticism from world leaders and industry experts for inaccuracies in its AI-generated historical images. The tech giant has decided to pause Gemini’s image generation of people to improve accuracy.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar raised concerns about Indian IT laws violation, while Elon Musk accused Google of running “racist, anti-civilisational programming” with its AI models. Google’s Senior VP, Prabhakar Raghavan, acknowledged the error in a blog post.

Explaining the issue, Raghavan mentioned that the AI failed to show a diverse range of people and became overly cautious over time, leading to inaccurate and offensive results. Google has halted image generation until improvements are made and extensive testing is done.

Raghavan admitted that despite efforts, there may still be occasional embarrassing or offensive outcomes. He assured that Google will address any issues promptly. The company aims to enhance accuracy before resuming image generation.

This move comes after widespread criticism and calls for accountability in AI technology. Google’s response and commitment to rectifying the situation are seen as crucial in maintaining trust and credibility in such advanced technologies.
