Meta purged over 22 million pieces of harmful content on Facebook and Instagram in India in January.

In January, Meta removed millions of pieces of bad and objectionable content from Facebook and Instagram in India. Facebook received over 29,000 reports and took action on over 4,600 complaints. Instagram received over 19,000 reports and acted on nearly 4,900 complaints, in compliance with IT Rules 2021.

According to Meta’s monthly report, in January, Facebook took down 17.8 million pieces of bad content and Instagram removed 4.8 million objectionable pieces in India. The company provided tools for users to resolve issues in thousands of cases and reviewed specialized reports for further action.

Meta stated, “Of the other 8,488 reports where specialised review was needed, we analysed content as per our policies, and took action on 4,632 complaints in total. The remaining 3,856 grievances were reviewed but may not have been actioned.” On Instagram, they addressed 9,476 cases out of 19,311 reports received through the Indian grievance mechanism.

Under the new IT Rules 2021, digital and social media platforms with over 5 million users are required to publish monthly compliance reports. Meta mentioned, “We measure the number of pieces of content we take action for going against our standards, which may include removing content or adding warnings for sensitive material.” In December 2023, Meta had taken down even more content from both platforms.
