Karnataka leads in India’s Energy Efficiency Index, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra make significant progress

New Delhi, March 2 (IANS) – Karnataka has emerged as the top-performing state in India in the latest State Energy Efficiency Index 2023. The index, released by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in collaboration with the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), evaluates states’ progress in energy efficiency implementation.

Karnataka secured an overall score of 86.5 out of 100, making it the leading state in SEEI 2023. The state has actively implemented energy conservation and efficiency policies in various sectors such as buildings, industries, transport, municipal services, and agriculture.

Following Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh stood out as the second-highest performer with a score of 83.25 out of 100. The state’s approach to energy efficiency involves policy formulation, financial incentives, capacity-building, and collaborative initiatives across different sectors.

The SEEI 2023 has shown improvement in the scores of 15 states compared to SEEI 2021-22. Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, and Haryana have made significant progress, with Maharashtra and Haryana witnessing score increases of 18.5 and 17 points, respectively.

The State Energy Efficiency Index aims to identify and address gaps in state-level energy efficiency policies, programmes, and investments. Energy efficiency plays a crucial role in complementing renewable energy efforts to combat climate change and ensure energy security.

States and Union Territories are categorized as ‘Front runner’ (>=60), ‘Achiever’ (50-59.75), ‘Contender’ (30-49.75), and ‘Aspirant’ (<30) based on their total scores in SEEI 2023. The assessment evaluates 36 states and UTs using 65 indicators distributed across demand sectors like buildings, industry, transport, and agriculture. The SEEI 2023 highlights the importance of energy efficiency in the national agenda and underscores the progress made by states in adopting sustainable and efficient energy practices. This index serves as a benchmark for states to strive for higher energy efficiency standards in the country's overall energy landscape.
