Government Permits Export of Onions to Bangladesh and UAE with certain conditions

The government has allowed the export of 64,400 tonnes of onion to the UAE and Bangladesh through NCEL, as per the notifications issued by DGFT. 50,000 tonnes for Bangladesh and 14,400 tonnes for the UAE will be exported in a calibrated manner to prevent domestic price spikes.

The modalities for exports to Bangladesh will be worked out by NCEL in consultation with the Department of Consumer Affairs. The government is closely monitoring domestic prices and wants to avoid any price escalation. The notification also includes a quantity ceiling of 3,600 metric tonnes for each quarter for exports to the UAE through NCEL.

On December 8, 2023, the government amended the export policy of onions from ‘free’ to ‘prohibited’ category till March 31, 2024, to control rising prices in the domestic market. However, certain government-to-government shipments are allowed to fulfill commitments with friendly countries. The move aims to stabilize prices and ensure smooth export operations.
