The Impact of Hidden Belly Fat on Your Health

New Delhi, March 6 (IANS) Health experts warn that visceral fat, which accumulates around internal organs, can significantly increase the risk of various health conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. Visceral fat is metabolically active and poses greater health risks compared to subcutaneous fat.

Mayank Madan, Director of minimal access and bariatric surgery at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, explained, “Visceral fat is closely linked to the development of Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiac ailments, and hormone-related issues like infertility. Truncal obesity, characterised by bulging around the waistline, serves as a notable indicator of visceral fat accumulation.”

Vikas Singhal, Senior Consultant at Medanta, Gurugram, highlighted that visceral fat produces hormones and substances that can cause inflammation and insulin resistance, leading to various health problems. Asians, particularly Indians, are more prone to visceral fat accumulation, with men and older adults being at a higher risk.

Even individuals with a healthy weight can have high levels of visceral fat, as it might not always be visible externally. A large waistline or belly can indicate the presence of visceral fat, with a waist circumference of more than 40 inches for men or 35 inches for women suggesting a higher risk of accumulation.

To prevent visceral fat, health experts recommend maintaining a balanced diet low in saturated and trans fats, regular exercise, enough sleep, stress management, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Exercise is particularly crucial for reducing visceral fat as it helps build muscle mass and increase metabolism.
