ASI to sign agreements for the adoption of heritage monuments

New Delhi, March 11 (IANS) In a significant development aimed at furthering the preservation and promotion of India’s cultural heritage, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has envisioned the ‘Adopt a Heritage 2.0’ programme and is now set to sign MoUs with various public and private sector entities for the adoption of monuments, the Ministry of Culture said on Monday. ASI will sign the MoUs on Tuesday and on the occasion will also launch its upgraded website on the occasion which will offer more information and a better experience to viewers.

The adoption programme will build on the existing programme and underscores the collective responsibility of both public and private entities in safeguarding the heritage for future generations and enhancing visitors’ experience. Monuments such as Qutub Minar, Purana Qila, and Elephanta Caves are among those included in the initiative.

With more than 3600 monuments under ASI’s protection nationwide, collaboration with external partners is vital for ensuring safety and enhancing visitors’ experience at these cultural treasures. The signing of MoUs will formalize the commitment of agencies to adopt specific monuments and contribute to their maintenance and better showcasing to the public.

The event, scheduled for March 12, 2024, at the National Museum in New Delhi, will witness the signing of MoUs in the presence of various agencies, with Minister of State Meenakashi Lekhi and other dignitaries in attendance. The selection process for partners involved due diligence and assessment of their commitment to maintaining amenities at each monument.

The upgraded ASI website will offer diverse functionalities and allow users to explore various aspects of India’s rich cultural tapestry, from historical sites to educational resources. This digital overhaul reflects ASI’s commitment to leveraging technology for the benefit of all, ensuring accessibility to the nation’s cultural treasures for a broader audience.

In conclusion, the ‘Adopt a Heritage 2.0’ programme signifies a proactive approach towards safeguarding India’s cultural heritage and preserving it for future generations. Through collaboration with public and private entities, ASI aims to enhance the overall visitor experience at these historical monuments while ensuring their proper maintenance and conservation.
