Industry celebrates removal of wireless operating license requirement to facilitate business operations

Industry Welcomes Government’s Abolition of Wireless Operating License

New Delhi, March 12 (IANS) – The industry has expressed its appreciation towards the government’s progressive approach to technological advancement, particularly the abolition of the wireless operating license (WOL). Union Minister for Communications and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the complete abolition of WOL, simplifying licensing processes in the telecom sector.

“With the elimination of wireless operating licenses, a simplified regulatory environment is expected to emerge, allowing for more focus on service enhancement and less on compliance,” said Lt Gen Dr S.P. Kochhar, Director General, COAI. This move is expected to reduce burden for telecom service providers (TSPs) and improve ease of doing business in the sector.

The industry believes that this decision will enable faster rollout of networks and higher mobile broadband penetration in the country, ultimately leading to better services for citizens nationwide and supporting the government’s ‘Digital India’ initiative. Additionally, the policy on Spectrum Regulatory Sandbox unveiled by the IT Minister is seen as a key step in advancing India’s telecommunications landscape and promoting global collaboration in the field.

“We are enthused by this strategic move by the government, which aligns with the outlook for reform-based changes in the policy and regulatory landscape of the Indian telecom sector,” stated the COAI. The Minister emphasized that implementing regulatory sandboxes to streamline equipment testing procedures will facilitate innovation and improve access to new technologies.

Overall, the industry has praised the government’s efforts to simplify regulations and promote technological advancement in the telecom sector, highlighting the potential for growth and innovation in the industry.
