The potential dangers of taking vitamin pills without a doctor’s prescription

New Delhi, March 17 (IANS) Health experts warn against the regular consumption of vitamin supplements without medical consultation. While beneficial for certain individuals, overdose can lead to health issues like digestive problems, kidney stones, and heart disease. Supplements should not replace a healthy diet.

According to Mohan Kumar Singh, Senior Consultant at Marengo Asia Hospital, Gurugram, excessive intake of multivitamin pills or calcium can have negative health consequences, including nausea, vomiting, and organ damage over time. These supplements can also interfere with prescribed medications, leading to imbalances or deficiencies.

Tushar Tayal, Lead Consultant at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, advises against regular consumption of multivitamins without confirming deficiencies through blood tests. Overconsumption can hinder the absorption of nutrients or medications, potentially becoming toxic over time. Multivitamins are not a substitute for a well-rounded diet.

Multivitamins typically contain 26 different vitamins and minerals, providing 100% of the recommended daily allowance. However, individuals should consult with a medical expert to determine specific nutritional needs based on age, gender, diet, and existing health conditions. While supplements may be necessary in some cases, they should complement a healthy lifestyle, not replace it.
