Musk grants access to AI chatbot Grok for developers and researchers

New Delhi, March 18 (IANS) Elon Musk-run xAI has made a groundbreaking announcement by releasing its AI chatbot Grok in open-source mode for developers and researchers. The move comes after Musk had mentioned last week the company’s plan to make Grok available for developers soon.

“We are releasing the weights and architecture of our 314 billion parameter Mixture-of-Experts model, Grok-1,” stated the company in a blog post. This marks a significant step towards democratizing access to advanced AI technology.

Grok-1, a 314 billion parameter Mixture-of-Experts model, is now available on open-source developer platform Github. This release includes the base model weights and network architecture of Grok-1, which was trained from scratch by xAI.

The raw base model checkpoint from the Grok-1 pre-training phase, concluded in October 2023, has been made public. It is important to note that the model is not fine-tuned for any specific application, such as dialogue, as clarified by the company.

Last year, xAI expanded Grok’s reach to India and 46 other countries, including Australia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Singapore. As part of the company’s efforts to enhance accessibility, the chatbot is currently available to subscribers of X Premium+, the top subscription tier of xAI’s services.

The company has already introduced access to its Grok AI (beta) for Premium+ subscribers in the US. This move is expected to facilitate further innovation and collaboration in the field of AI development, opening doors for new possibilities and advancements in the industry.
