Kohli makes history as first Indian batsman to surpass 12,000 runs in IPL 2024

Virat Kohli becomes the first Indian batter to reach 12,000 career runs in T20 cricket. He achieved this milestone while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Chennai Super Kings in the opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium. Overall, Kohli is the sixth batter to score 12,000 or more runs in T20 cricket, which includes T20 Internationals and franchise cricket.

The list of highest scorers in T20 cricket is topped by West Indies legend Chris Gayle with 14,562 runs. Following him are Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik with 13,360 runs, Kieron Pollard from West Indies with 12,900 runs, England’s Alex Hales with 12,3190 runs, and David Warner with 12, 065 runs. Kohli, with 12,015 runs, has now joined this elite group of T20 batters.

In the match against Chennai Super Kings, Kohli scored 21 runs off 20 deliveries before getting out. He started slowly but along with skipper Faf du Plessis, took the score to 41 before RCB lost their first wicket. Faf contributed 35 runs off 23 balls before being dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman.

Kohli’s first boundary came in the tenth over off a delivery from Maheesh Theekshana which he hit for a six over midwicket. However, RCB suffered quick blows losing Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, and Kohli in succession, slumping to 77/4 in the 12th over. This setback affected their momentum in the match.

Kohli’s achievement of reaching 12,000 career runs in T20 cricket highlights his consistency and dominance in the shortest format of the game. It showcases his ability to perform at the highest level and contribute significantly to his team’s success.
