Abhishek Manu Singhvi: Lawyers’ Role in Shaping Global Regulations

New Delhi, March 27 (IANS) Member of Parliament and senior Supreme Court advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi emphasized the importance of good governance in nation-building at the G20 Conclave. He highlighted the role of lawyers in shaping global regulations and economic development through legal expertise and collaboration.

Singhvi underlined the significant contributions of legal professionals in India’s independence movement and the impact of legally trained individuals in G20 countries on national development. He stressed the vital role of the legal community in ensuring the rule of law, which is crucial for economic growth and industrialization.

Addressing challenges posed by globalization, Singhvi highlighted the need for lawyers to address new issues like cybercrime and cyberterrorism through cooperation and coordination. He urged young lawyers to focus on harmonizing regulations related to technology, data privacy, and artificial intelligence to facilitate efficient governance and conflict resolution.

The G20 Conclave, themed on the role of lawyers in the economic development of G20 countries, aimed to explore the lesser-studied aspect of legal professionals’ contributions to economic progress. The event was organized under the guidance of distinguished legal expert Prof David B. Wilkins and welcomed by Dr. C. Raj Kumar, emphasizing the importance of legal expertise in driving economic growth.

The Special Address by Pratibha Jain from the American Bar Association highlighted the critical role of alternative investment in economic growth and innovation in G20 countries. Investment firms and legal systems play a crucial role in attracting investments and fostering long-term economic development through policy advocacy and legislative reform.

Reflecting on the geopolitical dynamics impacting legal frameworks, Dr. Mohan Kumar emphasized the need for a rules-based international order and highlighted Brazil’s initiative to establish high-level principles for legal entities’ responsibility against corruption within the G20 framework. The discussions at the conclave shed light on the evolving role of lawyers in navigating global challenges and shaping economic development in G20 nations.
