Djokovic on track to become the oldest player to reach no. 1 in ATP rankings, surpassing Federer

New Delhi, April 1 (IANS) Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic is set to make history this week as he breaks Roger Federer’s record as the oldest No. 1 in ATP rankings history at the age of 36 years and 321 days. Djokovic recently began his 419th week as the top-ranked player in the world.

In February last year, Djokovic surpassed Stefanie Graf’s record of 377 weeks to claim the title for the most weeks spent as World No. 1, surpassing both men’s and women’s players in tennis history. Djokovic first achieved the top ranking on 4 July 2011 at the age of 24, while his rivals Federer and Rafael Nadal reached No. 1 at the age of 22.

After nearly 13 years since his first stint as World No. 1, Djokovic remains dominant at the top of the tennis world. With the start of his 419th week at the top, he now holds a significant lead of 109 weeks over Federer, who has spent 310 weeks as No. 1. Djokovic’s consistency and longevity in the sport have solidified his place among the greatest players of all time.

Since turning 30 in May 2017, Djokovic has continued to excel on the court, amassing 31 tour-level titles, including 12 Grand Slam championships. He has also secured 10 ATP Masters 1000 titles and two Nitto ATP Finals trophies during this period. Djokovic’s success in major tournaments and his consistent presence at the top of the rankings showcase his enduring talent and determination in the sport.
