LG Energy Solution Ltd (LGES) and General Motors have commenced production at their second battery plant in the United States. The first batch of battery cells will be used in all-electric vehicles, including the Cadillac Lyriq SUV. Ultium Cells LLC., the joint venture between LGES and GM, plans to increase production capacity to 50 gigawatt-hours annually.
The joint venture’s first U.S. plant in Ohio began operations in November 2022, with a third plant in Michigan slated to start production next year. This move aligns with the companies’ goal of producing high-performance EVs capable of traveling over 500 kms on a single charge. LGES also operates plants in Holland, Michigan, and other regions like South Korea, Poland, and China.
Plants under development in the U.S. states of Michigan, Georgia, and Ohio, as well as Ontario, Canada, will further expand LGES’s manufacturing capabilities. Additionally, a new plant in Indonesia is set to begin production in the first half of 2024. LG Energy Solution Ltd continues to strengthen its position as a leader in battery manufacturing, catering to the growing demand for electric vehicles globally.
