Experts suggest dealing patiently with autistic children

Medical experts have highlighted the challenges faced by autistic children and teenagers when dealing with changes, unfamiliar places, and strangers. On Autism Awareness Day, experts emphasized the importance of proactive measures to help autistic individuals navigate these stressors effectively.

According to Prof Vivek Agrawal from KGMU, autistic individuals find comfort in predictable routines, making it essential to prepare them for expected and unexpected changes. Visual schedules and advance notice can help children understand what to expect and manage transitions better, reducing anxiety.

Prof Agrawal also expressed concerns about increased screen time in young children with autistic traits, which could lead to behavioral challenges. He recommended early intervention and limiting screen time for children below two years and restricting it to half an hour for children aged two to five years under supervision.

Former clinical psychologist, Prof K K Datt, explained that autistic children struggle to cope when their familiar realm is disturbed due to their neurological condition. Psychiatrist-cum-neurologist Dr Rahul Bharat suggested rewarding positive responses to help children develop the ability to handle unforeseen circumstances effectively.

In conclusion, experts urge parents and caregivers to be proactive in preparing autistic children for changes and to limit screen time to prevent behavioral challenges. With the right support and tools, autistic individuals can navigate unfamiliar situations with confidence and reduced anxiety.
