The Canadian province of British Columbia has recently enforced a ban on all cars equipped with Level 3 ADAS, impacting models like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Mercedes-Benz EQS. The updated Motor Vehicle Act makes it illegal to drive any vehicle with Level 3 systems, regardless of use.
Effective from 15th April, the new rule prohibits the operation of cars with Level 3 or above ADAS in British Columbia. Currently, the ban affects only the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and EQS models, which offer hands-off and eyes-off driving capabilities at speeds below 64 kmph.
Owners of the affected vehicles will face heavy fines ranging from CAD 368 to CAD 2,000 or even potential jail time if caught driving in the province. Despite the ban, the government leaves the door open for future use of ADAS technology, emphasizing the need for testing and policy adjustments for safe integration into transportation.
