Adani’s Copper Unit in Mundra Commences Operations, Providing 7,000 Jobs

Ahmedabad, March 28 (IANS) Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) recently launched Kutch Copper, their debut project in the metal industry, by commissioning the first unit of a greenfield copper refinery in Mundra, Gujarat. The refinery has a capacity of 0.5 MTPA and will provide 2,000 direct and 5,000 indirect job opportunities.

Gautam Adani, Founder and Chairman of Adani Group, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “Our speed of execution in this ambitious, super-sized project underscores our commitment to take India to the forefront of the global copper sector.” The company plans to invest nearly $1.2 billion in setting up the copper smelter in the first phase.

Upon completion of the second phase, Kutch Copper will become the world’s largest single-location custom smelter with 1 MTPA capacity. The company aims to uphold ESG performance standards and leverage state-of-the-art technology and digitalization to lead the industry towards sustainability.

Adani highlighted the importance of the domestic copper industry in achieving India’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2070. The company’s modern smelter will focus on innovative green technology to set new benchmarks in copper production and reduce its carbon footprint.

The demand for copper is expected to rise due to the growth of renewable energy, electric vehicles, and infrastructure development. Kutch Copper has implemented eco-friendly practices such as a zero-liquid discharge model, use of desalinated water, and recycling treated wastewater to minimize environmental impact.
