The gold mask has become the favourite treatment of beauty stash. But why such a success? From now on, gold is present everywhere in our beauty routines: in patches, in fabric, or cream… these products are experiencing a real boom. But is it beneficial for our skin or just a marketing concept? Nina Roos, a dermatologist in Paris, helps us to see more clearly.

Covering your face with gold is the bling beauty trend that celebrities love. Kate Hudson and Stella McCartney even took a picture of themselves with one of these precious masks just before walking the red carpet at the Met Gala last year.

It is also the beauty secret of the Victoria’s Secret Angels to have a bright and glowy complexion. Their favourite brand? The 24 K Pure Gold Leaf Mask by American dermatologist Mimi Luzon. The only problem is that you have to pay $300 (about 285 euros) for this treatment, which consists of only three masks. Fortunately, many brands have entered the gold cosmetics market at much more reasonable prices.

GOLD, A LITTLE NUGGET TO BOOST THE EPIDERMIS

Gold in cosmetics would have been one of Cleopatra’s favourite materials to preserve her youth with donkey milk. Today, it is back in our beauty rituals. According to dermatologist Dr Nina Roos: “In the form of nanoparticles, gold is a material that is biocompatible with the skin and thus corresponds to all skin types, even the most sensitive.” She continues: “Its microscopic molecules are enough to infiltrate the cells of the epidermis. Gold helps fight against oxidative stress caused by pollution, cigarettes, and stress. It also limits spots and wrinkles. And it is an excellent booster for the immune system because gold will stimulate the metabolism of the cells and will have an anti-bacterial action.

A composition of choice therefore to tone and revitalize the dullest skin. The dermatologist adds that the amount of gold present in the treatment will have an impact on its benefits. Thus, “the more gold the product contains, the greater the benefits”. Its virtues are real, so much so that “solid and medical science is interested in gold. There are many convincing publications in cancerology, even if it remains at the stage of therapeutic trials,” concludes Dr. Nina Roos.

WE TESTED FOR YOU THE GOLD COSMETICS

The mask of the brand Tosowoong or the patch for the eyes of Patches, we tested the virtues of gold on our skin. Let’s face it, its magical colour, as well as its luxurious composition, are enough to attract more than one.  We start with the patches that we leave on for 15 minutes for a sublimated look. Little by little, they end up retracting as if our skin had drunk every last bit of the golden substance. Result: the eyes look less tired. A first success that continues without delay because the experience is also positive for the face mask – although it is difficult to apply and to keep because it is very slippery. If we can’t advise you enough to try it comfortably sitting in front of your TV, we must admit that the verdict is clear: gold makes us luminous. Approved.
