Buddha Purnima 2022 Date and Time: Worship Method And Importance

Buddha Purnima will happen on 16 May. The day has special significance for both Hindus and Buddhists around the world. As per the panchang Buddha Purnima will occur on Vaishakh Purnima. Buddhists all around the world celebrate the day.

Siddhartha as Gautam Buddha was known before was born in Lumbini in present-day Nepal. He was a deep thinker and often remained in deep introspection which worried his parents who were from a princely family. To keep him away from the woes of the world, his parents married him very early to Princess Yashodara. However fate ordained otherwise and just one day after the birth of their child, Siddhartha left the palace in search of truth.

According to popular folklore, Siddhartha did severe penance under a Bodhi tree for 49 days. Finally, he attained enlightenment and since he acquired knowledge he is also known as Bodhisattva. For the rest of his life he spread his thoughts and vision around the world.  His teachings influenced many people including Emperor Ashoka who became a pacifist after seeing the destruction in the Kalinga War. Lord Buddha breathed his last or attained Parinirvana on the day of Vaishakh Purnima in 483 BC.

The festival of Buddha Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day of Vaishakh month. Along with Buddhism, people of Hinduism celebrate this festival with great pomp, because according to folk beliefs, Buddha was the 9th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This time people are very confused about the date of Buddha Purnima. Because Purnima is starting from 15th May which is ending on 16th May. But let us tell you that on May 15, it is starting from 12:45 in the afternoon, which will remain till 9.45 minutes on May 16. Buddha Purnima will be celebrated on 16th May as it is Udaya Tithi on 16th.
