Dev Diwali Story and Significance

As per Mythological Stories, there was a demon named Tarakasura. Tarakasura had three sons – Tarakaksha, Vidyunmali and Kamalaksha. The Younger Son of Lord Shiva, Kartikeya killed Tarakasura. Hearing the news of their father’s death, all three decided to take revenge. All three did severe penance for Brahma ji and asked for the boon of being immortal. But Brahma Ji suggested them to ask for another boon instead for this. All three asked to give a boon, that all three can only be killed with the same arrow. After getting the boon, all three together established their authority over the three worlds. Indra Dev became frightened by these three demons and went to the shelter of Lord Shiva.

Listening to Indra, Lord Shiva built a divine chariot to destroy these demons. Everything in this celestial chariot was made of deities. The wheels were made from the Moon and the Sun. Indra, Varuna, Yama and Kubera become the running horses of the chariot. The Himalayas become bow and Sheshnag becomes Pratycha. Lord Shiva himself became the arrow and Agnidev became the tip of the arrow. Lord Shiva himself rode on this divine chariot.

A fierce battle ensued between this chariot made by the gods and the three brothers. As soon as these three chariots came in a straight line, Lord Shiva destroyed all three by leaving an arrow.

After the battle, Lord Shiva got another name, Tripurari. And every year, this day started to celebrate as Dev Diwali.
