It is a contest between Mamata Banerjee, Priyanka Tibrewal of the BJP and Shrijib Biswas of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M). BJP and Trinamool Congress have filed a complaint against each other for influencing voters during polling in the Bhawanipur seat.

The BJP lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against state government ministers Firhad Hakim and Subrata Mukherjee, alleging they were influencing voters in the constituency. BJP candidate Tibrewal also claimed that Trinamool Congress workers forcibly stopped the voting process at a polling station.

However, Hakim dismissed the allegations against him and said that the BJP knows that it cannot win the by-polls, so it is looking for excuses. The Trinamool, on the other hand, also filed a complaint with the Election Commission, accusing Tibrewal of traveling with a convoy of 20 cars and intimidating voters.
