American electric car maker Tesla’s chief executive officer, Elon Musk, has been voted “Person of the Year” for 2021 by Time magazine. This year Tesla became the world’s most valuable car maker and Musk’s rocket company SpaceX also achieved the feat of touching space with a civilian crew. Musk also leads brain chip startup Neuralink and infrastructure firm The Boring Company.

Tesla’s market value increased to one trillion dollars (about Rs 76 lakh crore) this year. The company’s value has now exceeded the combined value of Ford Motor and General Motors. Tesla produces millions of cars per year and has managed to deal with supply chain difficulties better than its rival companies. Tesla has also been instrumental in attracting young customers to electric cars and focusing on the electric vehicles segment of large automobile companies. Edward Felsenthal, editor in chief of Time magazine, said: “Elon Musk is this year’s Person of the Year for driving big changes and making new possibilities a reality.”

The number of his followers on Twitter is more than 66 million. However, some of his tweets have also become a cause for controversy.

According to Time magazine, “the person of the year” is the person who has most affected the news or people’s lives, in better or worse ways. Time magazine named pop singer Olivia Rodrigo “Entertainer of the Year”, American gymnast Simone Biles “Athlete of the Year” and vaccine scientists “Heroes of the Year”. Last year, US President-elect, Joe Biden and Vice President-elect, Kamala Harris were jointly named “Person of the Year”. Time magazine started this tradition in 1927. Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos have also received this title before.
