Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on October 2 to mark the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Also known as Bapu, Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar in Gujarat. Due to his selfless contribution to India’s freedom struggle, he is also known as the “father of the nation”. A lawyer by profession, Bapu quit law to follow the path of non-violence and carried several successful campaigns for India’s independence from British Rule.

His philosophy of non-violence remains sage advice in a world and because of this, his birth anniversary is also celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Gandhi started his journey of non-violence from South Africa in 1906-07, where he initiated Satyagraha against the compulsory registration and passes for Indians. He returned to India in 1916 to participate in the freedom struggle against the British Raj. He initiated Dandi March and Quit India movement, which was quite significant in India’s freedom struggle. He assumed leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921 and led nationwide campaigns for achieving Swaraj or self-rule.

This year marks the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatama Gandhi. The day is celebrated across the country to honour and pay tribute to the father of the nation. Prayer service is also organsied at Gandhi’s memorial at Raj Ghat in New Delhi where he was cremated.
