Why Do We Celebrate Bhai Dooj

This Bhai Dooj festival dedicated to brother-sister relationship has been considered as one of the major festivals of Hinduism. This festival, which is celebrated on the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartik month, is also known as Yamadvithiya. On this festival, the sisters apply roli sandalwood to their brothers and wish for their bright future.

There are many mythological and historical stories about this festival. But according to the story which is most prevalent about the festival of Bhai Dooj – Yamuna, the sister of Yamraj, the lord of death, loved his brother very much.

She always requested him to come to her house, but due to being busy in her work, Yamraj could not go to her sister’s house. But once on the day of Kartik Shukla, Yamuna once again committed and invited his brother to come home. Admitting to his sister, he agreed to go to her house and before going to Yamuna’s house, he freed all the creatures coming to hell.

After that he reached his sister’s house, that day his sister Yamuna offered his brother an aarti by applying tika sandal and also made many kinds of dishes, fed his brother and his great welcome Yamraj was very happy to see this love of his sister. And asked her sister to ask for a boon.

Then his sister said, “Oh gentleman, you come to my house every year on this day, and on this day, every sister who respects his brother, never fear him.” Yamraj accepted his point. Since then, for this reason, people celebrate the festival of Bhai Dooj on the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartik month.

How Do We Celebrate Bhai Dooj – Custom and Tradition of Bhai Dooj

Like every festival, Bhaiya Dooj also has its own way of celebrating it. On this day, the sisters pray for Lord Vishnu and Ganesha by taking a bath in the morning and fasting, wishing their brother long and good life. After this, the sisters are fasting by applying tilak on the foreheads of their brothers and taking their aarti.

On this day, many brothers go to their sisters’ house and have food and also present some gifts to them. Along with this, bathing in the river Yamuna and worshiping on its banks gives special results.

Modern Tradition of Bhai Dooj

Presently, the festival of Raksha Bandhan has become more popular in place of Bhai Dooj. Because both festivals are dedicated to brother-sister relationship. Therefore, in today’s time, the popularity of the festival of Bhai Dooj is decreasing considerably.

Along with this, many changes have been observed in this festival in the present day, because in today’s busy and boggy life, relationships have remained nameless and also because this day does not remain a holiday. That is why people are unable to celebrate this day with grandeur as before.

In earlier times, people used to get this day done by going to their sisters’ house, but in today’s time this practice has completely ended. Now very few people follow this practice. If we want to keep the importance of this festival of Bhai Dooj, then we have to maintain its traditional form.
