Republic Day is among the national holiday. On this day, 26th January 1950, the Constitution of India was adopted. India became an independent nation, free from British Raj. However, after 3 years, the nation was governed by the colonial Government of India Act of 1935.

The constitution of India is the ultimate framework of the country. It consists of all the guidelines and rules that every citizen of the country must follow, it has directive principles, fundamental rights as well as duties that government institutions have to follow.

The date 26th January was selected because it was the enactment date of Purna Swaraj, an official declaration of independence led by the Indian National Congress. In 1930, this was the first step towards gaining full control over the country. After 1950 with the constitution, India was declared as the Republic of India — a “sovereign socialist secular democratic republic” that “secures all its citizen’s justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity,” as per India’s preamble.

During that time, members of the assembly were B. R. Ambedkar, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and B.N. Rau, to name a few. That is why when the Constitution of India came into full effect on November 26, 1949, many wanted to celebrate the day with full enthusiasm. It was a movement of national pride for every citizen of the country. 

Every year, the national parade is organized in the national capital New Delhi. The official Republic Day parade commences from Rashtrapati Bhavan i.e home to the President of India and goes all the way to the Gate of India. A 21-gun salute is fired by the Indian Army Regiment of Artillery.
