Ameer-E-Shariat Karnataka, an umbrella body of Muslim organizations in the state, has called for a Karnataka bandh on March 17 over the HC’s Hijab decision.

Maulana Sagir Ahmad Khan Rashadi of Ameer-E-Shariat Karnataka said that the bandh would be observed to show our strength and protest against the court’s decision.

Rashadi, in a video message, said, “There will be a complete bandh across the Karnataka State tomorrow, March 17, 2022, in response to the court’s order.”

He appealed to every section of the Muslim community to participate in this bandh.

On Wednesday, The High Court has upheld the ban on wearing headscarves in schools and colleges.

The court has ruled that wearing of Hijab is not a part of essential religious practices of Muslims, thus it cannot be protected under Article 25 which protects religious rights in India.

Notably, the Supreme Court has also refused to hear the petitions challenging a recent judgment by Karnataka’s High court, saying they will review it after Holi vacation, not urgently.
