Indian Coast Guard Day is celebrated on 1st February every year. The day is observed to recognize the contribution of the Indian Coast Guard in safeguarding India within its maritime domain. This year in 2023, India will be celebrating its 47th Indian Coast Guard anniversary. The day is used to highlight the importance as well as its history to teach the future generation of our country. Back in 1977, after getting the approval, the Indian Coast Guard was established. Initially, it was 5 patrol boats and 2 frigates transferred from the Indian Navy to form the first Indian coast guard. On 19th August 1978, Prime Minister Morarji Desai officially launched the first coast guard. It was 7 ships that used to monitor the Indian ocean as well as the exclusive economic zone.

Every year Indian Coast Guard Day is celebrated with a new theme to highlight its contribution effectively. Talking about the coast guard is made up of a group of sailors and officers hired from many branches and then dividing them into 3 organized teams who work in shifts daily for 4 hours in the sea.

In 1978, on 19th August, the flag was first officially raised at the inaugural ceremony of the Indian Coast Guard held in Mumbai.
