History

It is named after 19th-century philanthropist Johns Hopkins. He was an entrepreneur who contributed in improving public health and education in Baltimore.

The University was inaugurated in 1876 by the first president, Daniel Coit Gilman. The university started first the hospital and also nursing and medicine programs.
