Kargil Vijay Diwas is a very important day for all the countrymen of independent India. This day is celebrated every year in India on July 26. Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year in the memory of the brave sons of the country who sacrificed their lives while getting the high peaks of Kargil free from the occupation of enemies. This year, the 23rd anniversary of the Kargil War is being celebrated across the country on July 26 as Kargil Vijay Diwas.

There have been several armed wars between the two countries since the Indo-Pak war of 1971. Nuclear tests were conducted by both countries in 1998. The Pakistani incursion into Indian territory across the Line of Control was named ‘Operation Badr’. The Government of India launched ‘Operation Vijay’ in response to this and mobilized 2 lakh Indian soldiers for a long battle of about two months. This war took place between May and July 1999 in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. During the war, the Indian Army repulsed Pakistani infiltrators and was successful in capturing Tiger Hill and other posts as a part of Operation Vijay. This day will always be inscribed in the history of India as Kargil Vijay Diwas.

This war of Kargil lasted for almost two months at an altitude of 18 thousand feet, in which the martyrdom of 527 brave soldiers had to be given to the country. Every countryman is proud of the way the Indian Army drove the enemy in the Kargil war with indomitable courage. Therefore, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year in India to pay tribute to the soldiers who died in the Kargil war.
