It is believed in Hinduism that Devaki, who was living in the prison after the atrocities of brother Kansa, gave birth to Shri Krishna as her 8th child on the Ashtami date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada.
As per Puranas, Shri Krishna is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, one of the Trinity of Hinduism. Annually on Janmashtami, devotees observe a fast on this day to get the blessings and dignity of Krishna and offer prayers in the middle of the night with rituals. Dahi Handi also has special importance on Krishna Janmashtami.
