Every year, the third Monday of January is celebrated as Martin Luther King Jr Day, in memory of the main spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King, Jr Day honours the civil rights activist and minister who during his lifetime helped bring change and racial justice and continues to inspire the nation to reach the top of the mountain.

All banks, government offices, schools are closed on this day, as this day is an official holiday in the United States. The proposal to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day was introduced by labour unions in the US House of Representatives in 1979. First Martin Luther King Jr Day was celebrated on 20 January 1986, and this year (2022) it is being celebrated January 17th.

Martin Luther King was assassinated on 4 April 1968 by James Earl Ray at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. Ray was sentenced to 99 years of imprisonment.
