Rajya Sabha nominated member Swapan Dasgupta resigned from the membership of the Upper House on Tuesday after being declared a BJP candidate in the West Bengal assembly elections. Earlier, Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra alleged that Dasgupta violated the 10th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Dasgupta became a Rajya Sabha member in April 2016 and the BJP made him its candidate from Tarakeswar seat in the West Bengal assembly elections. Sources said that he submitted his resignation and said that it should be considered effective from Wednesday. Asked about the resignation, Dasgupta told PTI-language that ‘I have always said that whatever necessary steps are required to be taken before filing the nomination papers (for West Bengal elections), they will be taken’. His term as President was till April 2022.

Trinamool member Mohua Moitra had tweeted that Dasgupta was a BJP candidate in the Bengal elections. He said that as per the 10th schedule of the constitution, if a nominated member joins a political party after six months of taking oath then their membership can be canceled.

According to Moitra, “Dasgupta was sworn in as a member of the Upper House on April 2016 … he should be disqualified for joining the BJP.” Meanwhile Dasgupta said in a tweet, “I better Resigned from Rajya Sabha membership to dedicate himself to the battle of Bengal. ”
