Today the 161st birthday of Rabindranath Tagore is celebrated. Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is celebrated every year on May 7 to commemorate the birthday of Rabindranath Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore was a music lover as well as being rich in prodigious talent. He composed more than two thousand songs in his life. He has the distinction of writing the national anthems for India and Bangladesh. He is the only poet whose two compositions became the national anthems of two countries – ‘Jana Gana Mana’, the national anthem of India, and ‘Amar Sonar Bangla’, the national anthem of Bangladesh.

According to abplive.com, Rabindranath made his mark in history as a writer as well as a musician, playwright, lyricist, painter, and poet. Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 7 1861 in Kolkata. Rabindranath Tagore’s father’s name was Devendranath Tagore and his mother’s name was Sharda Devi. Rabindranath Tagore was the youngest of five siblings. Mahatma Gandhi gave the title of ‘Gurudev’ to Rabindraji. Tagore was the first non-European person to receive the Nobel Prize. Gurudev has written the national anthems of India (Jana Gana Mana) and Bangladesh (Amar Sonar Bangla). He is the only poet to do so. He died on August 7, 1941.

Many countries have also erected statues of the legendary writer to pay tribute to him. There are about five museums dedicated to Tagore out of which three are located in India and the remaining two in Bangladesh.
