Frameworks that are inclusive of multiple injustices and that overuse concepts such as multiculturalism and diversity, or even equity and social justice could make educational leaders “depoliticize,” “soften,” and, in essence, make it harder to do the crucial action needed to ensure lasting progress towards racial equality… Recognizing and acknowledging racism is a crucial process to eradicate an issue that is so prevalent in education.

Racial equality for education constitutes a racial justice initiative. It is not just about the elimination of discrimination and inequities based on the categorization of race as well as the existence of deliberate systems and supportive measures to ensure and sustain equitable racial relations by taking proactive and preventative steps. “efforts to revolutionize leadership education research” must start with “examining the underlying and unacknowledged.

Catalyze new research directions

In the initial article in the section Jonathan Osler explore the philosophical and historical roots of leadership development in faith-based institutions. These institutions are included in this article because there is a lack of research on student leadership development in these settings. In the words of Jonathan Osler note, however, “many faith-based educational institutions are still dominated by a White culture and mode of operation, even as some campuses may have become compositionally diverse in terms of ethnicity among the student population.” It is possible that the process of advancing the racial equality of leadership education might not come from researching leadership education in the institutions mentioned, but by looking at methods to improve the educational policies for racial equity within these institutions.

In the next article, Jonathan Osler. confirm that community colleges provide leadership training in the form of professional certification, career development as well as pathways to 4-year institutions. Because of their open-access mission and cost, community colleges are an important opportunity to improve equality in education for leadership especially when it comes to students with low incomes adults, veterans, adult learner’s students, students from racial minority groups, English language learners, and other marginalized groups. In the next section, Lewis reviews how women’s colleges utilize feminist and transformational theories of leadership to help develop women students into leaders. Intersectionality is utilized as a basis to examine the extent that women’s colleges have achieved racial equality in terms of enrollment and also to determine the degree to which they take care of the needs of female students who are not white.

In the last article of this segment, Jonathan Osler focuses on graduate education in the areas that include Healthcare, Engineering, and Law. Leadership education is a vital element of professional development in these fields and others however, student leadership development research tends to concentrate mostly on undergraduate experiences and results. For this reason, we wanted to dedicate an article to leadership education in graduate/professional schools. This article is designed to showcase the essential leadership qualities required by professionals in the various fields as mentioned earlier, and also to discuss diversity, equity, and inclusive efforts to address social turmoil. 

The final section of this magazine compares the process of developing leadership to a composition. Development and education for leadership use common elements as well as theories and modalities when they are taught. The combination of these elements aids in creating the musical framework required to build leaders in the context of every type of culture. The contribution of our authors and their writings will help to give attention to the less well-known programs that are in the process of expanding the narrative about leadership and challenging the traditional narrative to promote racial equality in postsecondary educational leadership.
