Every year on January 30, Shaheed Diwas is commemorated by the entire country. On this day, Nathuram Vinayak Godse shot Mahatma Gandhi thrice while the latter was doing his evening prayer at Birla Bhavan, Delhi. This year in 2024, Shaheed Diwas will be observed on Tuesday.

History

When Mahatma Gandhi was going to Birla Bhavan, Delhi to address an evening prayer meeting with his grandnieces, he was shot to death. A Hindu nationalist, Nathuram Godse, on January 30, 1948, around 5:17 PM, fired three bullets straight at Gandhi Ji’s chest. Reports stated that Mahatma Gandhi died immediately.

Significance

Mahatma Gandhi’s full name was Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, Gujrat. He is renowned and well-known throughout the nation for influencing the minds of the younger generation to follow non-violence and peace.

His influence was not only limited to India but also abroad. His birth anniversary is regarded as a national holiday and also celebrated as the International Day of Non-violence. The celebration of International Day of Non-violence was proposed by the UNGA or the United Nations General Assembly.
