In India, Teachers’ Day is celebrated on 5 September. The day marks the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was the country’s former President, scholar, philosopher and Bharat Ratna Awardee. History
National Teachers’ Day in India has been celebrated since 1962. The day is celebrated on 5 September, because on the same day in 1888, Nobel Prize Awardee and Former President of India, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born.
Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishna was a very promising student. It is also said about him that his father did not want Radhakrishna to learn English. His father wanted him to become the priest of the temple. Nonetheless, Radhakrishnan pursued higher education in Tirupati and Vellore. Thereafter, he devoted his entire life to education. He went to Mysore, Kolkata, Oxford and later to Chicago as an education specialist. At that time it was a matter of great pride for an Indian to be invited abroad for a lecture on education. Radhakrishnan was honoured with the title of “Sir” by the British Government. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishna was also awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954.
