University of Portland (UP) was founded in 1901 and affiliated with the Congregation of Holy Cross. The university has approximately 4,200 students.

The University of Portland has campus located near St. Johns. It offers different majors like arts science, a graduate school; and schools of business, education, engineering, and nursing. It is the largest corporation in North Portland and has an annual economic impact on Portland of some $170 million. It has around 13,000 alumni live in the Portland metropolitan area.

After financial losses in 1893, Portland University vacated the Bluff Campus and started taking classes East Portland from 1896 to 1897.
