Victory over Japan Day 2022: A Complete Summary of the Japanese Army's Surrender in 1945

VJ Day, also known as Victory over Japan Day, was observed on August 15, 1945, and it signaled the conclusion of World War Two. As the title indicates, the Allies, which included Britain, the US, as well as other nations engaged in joint combat, claimed victory against Japan on August 15, 1945.

At a media briefing at the White House on August 14 at 7 p.m., US President Harry S. Truman announced the information days following rumors. “The last of our adversaries are brought low,” British Prime Minister Clement Atlee later announced after nightfall. The announcement of the capitulation by Japan’s King Hirohito the next day was made for the first occasion ever seen on the radio.

As a result, World War Two was formally declared over on August 15, 1945, and dubbed Victory over Japan Day. The war in Europe came to an end in May 1945, but so many Allied troops, cruisers, and pilots, including those from the USSR, US, and the UK, were still engaged in combat with Japan throughout east Asia.

In the wrangle against Japan, approximately 71,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers perished, along with more than 12,000 POWs who passed away while being held by the Japanese. American and British troops who had surrendered were among the prisoners of war that Japan mistreated. The Allies had given Japan until July 26, 1945, to submit after the combat in Europe had ended, but this case was closed without Japan doing so.

Therefore, to end the war permanently, the US unleashed two atomic bombs on Japan. Bombs were dropped on the Japanese Nagasaki and Hiroshima on August 6 and 8, respectively.

Victory over Japan Day Celebration

Participating in parades and street festivities were huge numbers of people from the allies’ countries. In London, office workers tossed copious amounts of documents out of buildings like confetti as troops scaled traffic lights and brandished newspapers in the air.

On the USS Missouri warship in Tokyo Bay on September 2, the formal capitulation paperwork was exchanged. Due to this, some individuals also observed this very day as VJ Day, and it is still regarded as a pivotal occasion in the years after WWII.
