In the past, cricket has been exclusively a male sport, but with the introduction of the ICC Women’s Championship, that’s changing fast. As numerous other sports already have their women’s leagues, it was about time that cricket followed suit.

The ICC Women’s Championships

The tournament’s 2014-2016 and 2017-2020 editions saw growing support for the women’s game. Teams from England, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa participated.

The third edition of the tournament in 2022-2025 sees the addition of teams from strong cricketing nations Ireland and Bangladesh. This brings the number of participating teams up to 10, demonstrating the commitment to developing the women’s sport that’s been shown by the ICC. Teams will each play eight series of three matches. At the end of the series, the top five teams will head to the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup.

In addition, five Associate teams from the women’s league (Scotland, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, the Netherlands, and the USA) have been given ODI (One Day International) status. Their one-day results will count towards both their ODI rankings and their ability to qualify for the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup.

Feelings on the Ground

The Australian captain, Meg Lanning, agrees that the addition of more teams would be wonderful for the women’s game. Winners of both previous cycles of the IWC (International Women’s Championship), Australia will be looking to consolidate their dominance in the 2022-25 series.

England women’s captain, Heather Knight, agrees that the ICC Women’s Championship is a crucial step forward for the game and endorses the move to increase the number of participating teams to 10. She hopes that this will be only the beginning as the ICC Women’s Championship continues to grow from strength to strength.

Newcomer Thailand has shown itself a force to be reckoned with. Harshal Pathak, Thailand’s head coach, brings an openly aggressive approach to the game (according to AFP news). The team brings their determination and strategy to all aspects of the game, from batting to bowling and fielding.
