The Supreme Court has sought answers from the Central Government and all the states on the matter related to the Ration Card. Nearly three crore ration cards were canceled due to lack of Aadhaar cards, which the Supreme Court on Wednesday termed as a very serious matter and sought answers from the central government and all states on the matter. A bench of Chief Justice (CJI) SA Bobde and Justice AC Bopanna and Justice V Ramasubramanian said that this should not be seen as an adversarial case as it is a very serious matter.

The bench said that a final hearing would be held on the case. At the beginning of the hearing, senior counsel Colin Gonzalvis, appearing for the petitioner Koyli Devi, said that the petition takes up a larger case. The CJI said, “A similar case came before me in the Bombay High Court. I think the matter should have been filed in the High Court concerned. “The bench told the counsel that they had extended the scope of the case.

Not an antagonistic lawsuit

Gonzalvis argued that this was an important matter as the Center had canceled about three crore ration cards. The bench said that it would hear the case on another day, as Gonsalves said that the central government had canceled the ration cards. Additional Solicitor General Aman Lekhi said that Gonsalves made a false statement that the Center had canceled the ration cards. The bench said, “We are seeking answers from you (from the Center) due to the Aadhaar card case.” This is not a protest lawsuit. We will finally hear it.

Notice to be issued, to be responded to in four weeks. Lekhi said that notices had already been issued in this case and the Center’s reply was on record. Gonzalvis said the notice was issued not on the main petition, but on alternative grievance redressal.

11-year-old daughter dies of starvation in Jharkhand

He said, the main case is the cancellation of three crore ration cards and death due to hunger. The apex court had on December 9, 2019 sought answers from all the states for the death of people due to deprivation of ration supplies for not having a valid Aadhaar card. This petition has been filed by Devi, whose 11-year-old daughter Santoshi died in Jharkhand on September 28, 2018 due to starvation.

Santoshi’s sister Gudiya Devi is the joint petitioner in the case. The petition said that his ration card was canceled by the local authorities for not being connected to the Aadhaar card, due to which his family stopped getting ration from March 2007 and the whole family was forced to starve and His daughter Santoshi died due to lack of food.
