Teachers’ Day is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Throughout his life, he was awarded many scholarships. He enrolled in Voorhees College in Vellore but later shifted to Madras Christian College at the age of 17. He then completed his Master’s degree in Philosophy in 1906 and became a professor.
In 1946, he was also elected to the Constituent Assembly, serving as the ambassador to UNESCO and then to Moscow. He went on the become the Vice President of India in 1952 and then again in 1962 as the second President of independent India.
One more side that is worth mentioning is that when he became the President of India, he only took Rs 2500 out of his salary of Rs 10,000. The rest of the money was donated to Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund every month.
It was his contribution to our nation, since 1962, 5 September is celebrated as Teachers’ Day every year.
