Karwa immediately hurried to the river after hearing the sound, when she found her husband being taken by the crocodile. When Karwa saw this, he promptly grabbed some uncooked thread and tethered the crocodile to something like a tree. Karwa’s chastity was so powerful that the raw thread also couldn’t tangle.
Then Karwa shouted at Yamraj and begged him to kill the crocodile and grant her husband life. Yamraj objected, though. Infuriated, Karva urged Yamraj to curse after hearing this. As soon as Yamraj realized his curse would come true, he dispatched the alligator to Yamlok and revived Karva’s husband. This is the rationale behind the Karwa Chauth fast, according to which women will guard their spouses in the same way that Karwa brought her spouse back from the grave.
