Buddha Purnima– The holy festival also known as Vesak, is regarded as the most prestigious festival in the Buddhist community. The auspicious day celebrates the enlightenment, birth, and death of Gautama Buddha. Those who don’t know Gautama Buddha is the founder of Buddhism and is worshipped by Buddhist followers. Usually, it is celebrated on the 1st full moon day in the Hindu month of Vaisakah. As per the Gregorian calendar, In 2023, Buddha Purnima will be celebrated on 5th May.
Significance
The exact time and date of Lord Buddha’s birth are unknown, it has been believed that he lived during the time between 4th and 6th centuries BC. Initially, he was born Prince Siddhartha in Nepal, Lumbini. According to the legend, he was destined to become a Great King long before he was born. He was brought up in luxury and with access to everything, which made him see the world from a different perspective. He never knew what poverty is or say how hard humans struggle in their life to make ends meet. In his late 20s, he took a tour in his kingdom and was shocked to see old age, death, sickness, struggle and poverty. This made him sad and the Prince decided to leave his life of luxury and embark on a journey to discover the true source of happiness and end all the suffering.
In the next years, he looked into many types of teaching and still was unable to find the true source of happiness and liberation until one day he was meditating and awoke with the solution he has been searching for so long. Merely at the age of 35, became the ‘Buddha’ or the ‘Awakened One’. After that in his life, he started preaching the Dharma guide that takes the person towards the path of enlightenment. He took his last breath in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh at the age of 80.
