India is considered the largest producer of milk in the world. Milk is a superfood that is consumed by both humans and animals together. Annually on 1 June, World Milk Day is commemorated across the world. However, this day was established by the FAO or Food and Agricultural Organisation.

National Milk Day: History
In 2014 the NDDB or the National Dairy Development Board along with 22 state-level milk federations and the Indian Dairy Association (IDA), all together came up to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr Verghese Kurien. Dr. Verghese Kurien is popularly known as the father of the White Revolution that occurred on 26 November in India. As a result of which, the very first celebration of National Milk Day was done in 2014, on 26 November.
Operation Flood, a rural development program was started by the National Dairy Development Board of India in 1970. The main aim of this program was to develop and produce a nationwide milk grid. Operation Flood was among the largest programs. This day focuses on reducing the unprofessional behavior and malpractices adopted by the merchants and the milk traders.
This move later transformed India into of the largest milk producers worldwide. India is not only tops in producing milk but milk products as well. A few of the main objectives of the operation Flood were to skyrocket the milk production in the nation, to help the rural economy with some relief and augment them, and to set a fair and equitable price for the consumers.
