History and Significance
Hinduism observes Guru Purnima as an important holiday to remember the famous sage Ved Vyasa’s birth. The Puranas, the Mahabharata, and the Vedas are all attributed to Vyasa, who also wrote the Puranas. On this day, it is thought that prayers are sent directly to the great teacher, banishing ignorance and darkness from the lives of followers. When Gautam Buddha moved from Bodhgaya to Sarnath and established the group of his disciples known as the “Sangha,” it was on this day, known in Buddhism as Guru Purnima, that he gave his first teachings to his first five disciples. This day is honored in Jainism to remember Lord Mahavira, who was Gautam Swami’s first teacher and the “Guru” to him. Additionally, farmers attach importance to Guru Purnima because they ask for blessings for good rains during the approaching harvest season.

Guru Purnima is a special day set aside for Hindus to commemorate and honor the spiritual mentors who have helped them throughout their lives. Numerous locations host Vyasa pujas during which mantras are chanted in honor of the Guru. People pay respect by presenting flowers and gifts, and in return, they are blessed with prasad and charanamrita. Hymns, recitals, and devotional music are sung all day long.
