The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer or World Ozone Day is observed on 16th September every year. As you all know, the ozone layer is very vital part of the earth’s atmosphere, it helps to keep ultraviolet rays away from the earth’s atmosphere.
But now the ozone layer is depleting because of a toxic chemical called chlorofluorocarbons (or CFCs). It mostly emerges from aerosol cans and refrigerators. It causes ozone depletion causing severe damage to the natural environment of the earth. It signs of its depletion were noticed in 1980 and 70s.
As per weather experts, depletion means having holes in the ozone layer above the Antarctic in the southern hemisphere winter/spring season.
Back in 1985, many governing bodies adopted the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. It was implemented in 1988. All the signing bodies agreed to work and research the effects of activities on the ozone layer. It should be noted that the Convention doesn’t allow these countries to take certain actions on ozone-depleting substances.
World Ozone Day 2023 Theme
This year i.e 2023 theme will be Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone layer and reducing climate change. As mentioned above, it will celebrate the successful moments of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in fixing the ozone layer and reducing climate change.
As per the latest update from the Scientific Assessment Panel to the Montreal Protocol, it has been confirmed ozone layer is recovering and is expected to return a levels by around 2066 over the Antarctic. It has been achieved by minimizing the ozone-depleting substances use. Plus, due to harmful UV rays, millions of people suffer from skin cancer and other severe diseases.
