Vijay Diwas is observed on 18 December every year. It is a celebration of India’s victory over Pakistan in 1971. That resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. A liberated East Pakistan. In 1971, the Indo-Pakistan war commenced and lasted up to 13 days.
On 16 December, Pakistan accepted its fate and surrendered to India. The complete surrender ended up in the creation of a new country i.e Bangladesh. The army of Pakistan was left with 93,000 soldiers. To this day, it is regarded as the “Greatest Ever Victory” that made India a regional power in East Asia.
It all started due to the ill-treatment of West Pakistan’s people resulting in the Bangladesh Liberation War. Then on 26 March 1971, the call for succession was ignited by the people of East Pakistan. Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister at that time supported it for their independence struggle.
In 1971, the was between Pakistan’s military. Pakistan struck 11 Indian Air Force stations on 3 December resulting in supporting Bengali nationalist groups in East Pakistan for Bangladesh’s independence struggle.
It was a war for the genocide of so many people in East Pakistan done by the oppressive military regime under General Yahya Khan of Pakistan. The war was quite intense and is still talked about.
To tackle the situation, Operation Trident was initiated by India on 4 December 1971. It involved the Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command striking a surprise attack on Karachi port. The codename for the operation was Trident.
On 16 December 1971, Bangladesh was formed as a new nation, an independent country formed from the shackles of Pakistan. This is the reason why 16 December is celebrated as ‘Vijay Diwas’ to celebrate the victory of India during the Indo-Pakistan war.
